V8/4-Speed 1962 Chevrolet Nova Convertible

1962 Chevrolet Nova V8 4-Speed is a first-year model that has been upgraded with a 283CI Chevy V8 and T-10 4-speed transmission. Available in convertible trim for 1962-1963 only, Novas were not yet factory-equipped with V8s. This one features period correct “Camel Hump” heads and a rare 1962 factory air conditioning unit. Originally a 6-cylinder/automatic car, it is not known when the drivetrain upgrade occurred and it was purchased by the seller 4 years ago, who says it is a reliable driver that is too nice to restore. This is an interesting model from the first year of production and no slouch with the V8/4-speed swap.

Likely restored by a previous owner, the original color is unknown but red over two-tone interior and good chrome suits the car well. The yellow California license plates are not original but wear a ’62 registration tag per YOM rules and are correct for the model year. The white convertible top fits tightly and is stowed under a red top boot. The car has current California registration.

Inside, the red and white bench seat matches the two-tone door panels and red dash. The seller says lights, blinkers, radio, wipers, and heater are all in good working order. The ride is said to be very comfortable thanks to nicely padded seats, higher profile tires, and smooth suspension. A modern stereo fits in the factory hole with a 6-disc CD changer concealed in the trunk, and a rare period Chevrolet air conditioning unit is included in the sale but not installed.

When the seller took delivery of the car he had a local shop perform an engine tune up, replace the front suspension bushings, install new brakes, and new tires. Things look very tidy inside and out – check out the trunk and several lift shots below. If he were keeping the car the seller says he would consider installing power steering, but admits that “my recently purchased Mercedes has made me soft.”

A mild performance cam provides what the seller says is a “don’t mess with me rumble” through its twin side-exit exhaust. Novas were relatively light cars and could sometimes outperform the Corvette, and nowadays are rather simple machines to wrench on with widely available and inexpensive parts. This is a cool niche model with all the right engine upgrades that make it a inconspicuous hotrod.
